Accessing Databases Remotely
Return to Online Databases
Situation:
You are not able to access specific databases available from the
library web page from home or office. The site you are trying to
access is asking for a username and password.
Solution:
In this situation, you want Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal
Firewall to pass referrer information to a specific web page. This
seems to occur often with ProQuest, HeritageQuest,
Encyclopedia Britannica, Daily Life Online, S&P
NetAdvantage, and Reference USA.
For Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall
versions 2003 and 2004:
1. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall
2. Do one of the following
a. For 2003 versions, click Options then Internet Security or Personal
Firewall, and then click Web Content Tab.
b. For 2004 versions, double-click Privacy Control and then click
Advanced.
3. Click Add Site. A new site/domain box appears.
4. Enter the name of the site, e.g., heritagequestonline.com,
without www. or http://. Click OK. The site name appears in the
left frame of the Options window.
5. Click the name of the new site.
6. Click the Global Settings Tab or Privacy Tab.
7. In the “Information About Visited Sites” section,
clear “Use Default Settings”, or check the “Use
These Rules for…” box.
8. Then change the referrer from “Block” to “Permit”.
9. Click OK to close the Options window and repeat steps for other
databases. See list below.
For Norton Internet Security 2005:
1. Open Norton Security 2005
2. Click on Privacy Control.
3. Click on Configure.
4. Click on Advanced.
5. Click on Add Site.
6. Remove the www. or http:// from the box and type in only heritagequestonline.com
(for HeritageQuest; see list below for other databases' sites).
7. Choose heritagequestonline.com from the list.
8. Uncheck Use Default Settings for every option under
the Global Settings tab.
9. Choose Permit for every option under the Global Settings
tab.
10. Click OK.
11. Proceed to log into site via the library.
Repeat steps for other databases, adding the appropriate
sites listed below in the Add Site box.
- Daily Life Online: greenwoodpub.scbbs.com
- Encyclopedia Britannica: library.eb.com
- HeritageQuest: heritagequestonline.com
- S&P NetAdvantage: netadvantage.standardandpoors.com
- Reference USA: referenceusa.com
Accessing Other Library Databases Remotely
Clearing the Cookies/Temporary Internet Files
Some difficulties in accessing or using a database may be associated
with an overload of cookies and temporary Internet files stored
in the browser. Clearing those files may work. In your browser,
select “Tools” and then “Internet Options”.
Click on “Delete Cookies” then OK, and then click “Delete
Files” and click OK.
Situation:
You are not able to access specific databases available from the
library web page from home or office. The site you are trying to
access is not displaying at all.
In this situation, you may need to adjust your browser settings
to accept “cookies” from a specific web page. With more
recent versions of web browsers, the default security settings are
higher, and the necessary “cookie” settings will not
automatically install on your PC.
Solution:
1. At the top of your browser, go to “Tools”.
2. Select “Internet Options”.
3. Select the “Privacy” tab.
4. Click on the “Edit” button.
5. In the field at the top of the page, type in the web address
(e.g., library.morningstar.com)
6. Click on the “Allow” button.
7. Click on the OK button.
8. Click on the “Refresh” button at the top of your
browser.
9. Close out your browser.
10. Re-open browser and go to the library’s website and to
the online dataset, logging on as you would normally.
Situation:
You are in an electronic database that appears to be working but
when you click to display information nothing happens.
Solution:
This situation might be explained by a pop-up blocker. Check your
computer, usually the lower right corner of the task bar, for an
icon that will flash when you try to access something on the web
site. Right click on the pop-up blocker and set it to accept pop-ups
from the site.
