In May, the Northbrook Public library debuted its Popular Picks section in the Youth Services department, which makes it quick and easy for those who want to pop into the library to grab a few favorites for children to read.
The new section, available on the second floor near the aquarium, showcases highly sought after children’s books, usually timed with a new release in a popular series, a movie or TV tie-in, connection to a current event, or a new release by a popular author.
“Our hope is that by purchasing more copies of high demand materials and displaying them in a prominent place, we will be making it easy for patrons to access the materials that they are hoping to find,” says Youth Services Manager, Kelly Durov. “We also want to surprise and delight others who may not have been expecting to find their favorite current title on display.”
The Youth Services department reviews circulation data, youth book bestseller lists, and book and media releases for the upcoming month to select and purchase books for the new section, which is already proving to be quite popular.
According to Youth Services librarian Amanda Lopez, within three days of its debut, almost all of the 250 books in the section had been checked out! She also received feedback from one patron who expressed how excited her children were to find the latest book in their favorite series, the Hilo series by Judd Winick.
