Babies, toddlers and pre-kindergarteners and their caregivers are invited to celebrate the wonderful world of books for babies and young children with musical guest Jim Gill, our version of an indoor Pop-up Adventure Playground, and a hands-on activity stations for kids.
The celebration is a great time to join our “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” reading program and to celebrate the reading achievements of children who are currently participating in the program.
About the Celebration
First, kids and caregivers are invited to enjoy a concert by popular children’s musician, Jim Gill in the library’s Auditorium on Thursday, October 17 at 10:00am. To reserve a seat for the concert, please call 847-272-6224 or reserve a spot online.
After the concert, kids and caregivers are invited to head up to the Youth Services department for more fun with our indoor Pop-up Adventure Playground and hands-on activity stations at 11:00am!
What is 1000 Books Before Kindergarten?
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a national program that is open to all children who have not yet entered kindergarten. Any book read to a child counts toward the 1,000 book benchmark. The ultimate goal of the program is to establish strong literacy skills at an early age, with the library on call to help parents and caregivers every step of the way.
Northbrook Public Library kicked off their first 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program in October of 2017, and this November, we’re having our first graduation ceremony to celebrate those children who have reached their goal of reaching 1000 books!
No matter if it takes families three months or three years to reach 1,000 books, children’s librarian, Anna Fillmore Fillmore believes the program is an invaluable addition to any home with young children.
“Having that many books read to you at that age is such an enriching experience,” said Fillmore. “It will absolutely change your life.”
