10 Fun Things to Do at the Library This Summer

by Sam Lasky, Graphics & Marketing Summer Teen Volunteer

Don’t miss your chance to participate in upcoming events at the one and only Northbrook Public Library! Discover all the amazing activities you or your kids can take part in that you might never have known about. Stop by and pick up the July-August newsletter for even more information on how to get involved here at NPL.

1. Join a Book Club
Hey teen readers! Did you know the library holds its own book discussions? Grades 6-12 have the opportunity to meet at our local Sunset Foods to discuss the chosen novels. For July, the book being discussed will be Caged Warrior by Alan Lawrence. First meeting is July 29th, 7-8pm at Sunset.

But don’t worry, little ones. If you’re interested, there is also a book discussion for our youngsters. The book next month will be The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. Parents, bring your young readers by for our first Bookworm Club meeting on July 21st at 6:30-7:30pm. Find us by the Youth Services Department in the Activity Room!

2. Rock n’ Roll fest

Don’t miss our Rock Music Month! Kids are welcome for our youth rocker events! Join us for Rock Music Month Kick Off (All Ages) on August 1st at 10:30am in the Pollak Room. Little rockers get to jam out with their own music and moves! Also register for a spot to attend Rockfest on August 12th, 3:30-5pm. Learn more about crafts and tech to take your music even further. Or bring the kids by for stories, crafts and snacks. Find out more at www.northbrook.info/RMM.

3. Tween Camps

Camp Tween is our library-run camp for grades 3-5. Get crafty with our Stop Motion Animation course on July 8th from 2-4pm. Or check out our Crafternoon, where staff settle in to help kids with Back to School Craft projects on July 15th, 2-4pm. Every kid loves getting messy so give them a chance to try something new, here at Camp Tween. Summer Puppet Theatre is also available for K-3. Create a puppet and put on a play in this two part puppet workshop! Attend Wednesdays July 13 & 20 from 2-3pm, in Pollak Room A.

4. Crafting Craze!

Knitters, Crocheters, Yarn-ers, get ready to cast on! With our new Keep Calm and Carry Yarn classes, you will become an expert in no time. You can share what you know or learn from the youth volunteers waiting to teach you their skills. Come check out our classes on any day: June 14, 21, 28 and July 5, 12, 19, 26, 2:30-4 pm at the Loft. Remember, all ages are invited to join! Crochet a Classic Granny Square at our meeting on Tuesday, July 19th, 7-8pm in the Interactive Classroom if you're interested in that as well.

5. Movies, you say?

I bet you didn’t know that the library is constantly playing movies & old favorite films every Wednesday at 1pm and 7:30pm. In July we are kicking it off with The Marvel Cinema Universe. Check out the entire collection, from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Ant-Man, this month is for the Marvel fans!

And if you want to check back at August, we’re paying homage to our rock music with a series of old rock movies such as High Fidelity and Across the Universe. Be there to see the new and improved NPL auditorium!

6. It’s Free! Free Music!

The library offers downloadable music onto your smart phone, tablet or computer with Hoopla. All you need to do is create an account with your email and your Library card and you’re good to go! Tune in to our broad selection of albums (for free). Staff recommend their favorites, such as Hamilton (the musical soundtrack) or Kiss Box Set in honor of upcoming Rock music month!

7. Explore a New Tech

Ages 10 and up are invited to our Raspberry Pi crash course. Cover the basics of using Pi and try out other awesome projects such as RetroPie and Sorting Hat. Family Tech Explorers, including both parents and kids, can show up at the library for our Circuits and littleBits program on July 7, from 6-7:30 in the Activity Room. Tech fans can also join the Computer Aided Design and 3D printing on July 14, 6-7:30pm. All interested parties can come to build real world skills and help strengthen their tech knowledge!

8. Unleash Your Inner Wizard

We’re calling all you Potter heads! It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for… the broomsticks are ready and the golden snitch has been released! Come to the library on July 31 from 2-3:30 if you are interested in dueling others in an intense game of Quidditch! All in honor of Harry Potter’s birthday. We meet in the Pollak Room but may have the match outside (if we’re lucky).

9. Celebrate the Olympics

Eager sports players and Olympic fans will want to attend our Summer Olympics at the library on August 5, from 2-4pm in the Pollak Room. Come run, play and experience the Olympics for yourself! Everyone is invited.

10. Hang out with your Fellow Teen Volunteers!

If you are a teen volunteer, you deserve a pat on the back for your hard work keeping the library going this summer. We owe a big thanks to all of your help in every department. We want to invite each of you to our summer volunteer appreciation party to show our gratitude with food, gifts and awards. You all have dedicated time to our library and we couldn’t be more pleased with the eager work ethic of all our volunteers. Register online to the party, scheduled for August 10th, 1:30-3pm.
