Free library cards for ALL Northbrook kids
For the first time, we’re able to waive non-resident fees for children ages 18 and younger who live in unincorporated Northbrook! This is possible due to an expansion of the IL Local Library Act. To get a library card, parents or guardians can visit the Northbrook Public Library with their child and present a valid Illinois state photo ID.
Note: Children 18 or younger living in unincorporated Glenview can visit the Glenview Public Library to get a free Glenview library card.
Northbrook Library Cards No Longer Expire for Northbrook Residents
Until now, Northbrook library cards expired every three years, which meant you were required to show proof of your current address to renew your card. We now subscribe to a service that automatically checks addresses, so as long as you continue to reside in the Village of Northbrook, you’ll never have to renew your library card! (We still hope you come in to say "hi" and to enjoy the library.)
New Lower Age to Fill Out a Library Card Application for Northbrook Residents
Although there are no minimum age requirements to get a library card, until now, library card applicants living in the Village of Northbrook under the age of 18 were required to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver to fill out an application.
Our new policy lowers allows residents who are age 15 and up to fill out an application and receive a library card without a parent or guardian present. (Children younger than 15 still need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.)
