Libraries are often known for their annual Summer and Winter Reading Clubs, and the Northbrook Public Library is no exception. But this spring, the Library will welcome a new twist on the traditional reading club: the first ever Spring Listening & Viewing Club, which will run from March 1 until May 31.
Library patrons who sign up for Spring Listening & Viewing Club will be able to enjoy award winning movies and music and earn chances to win prizes. Anyone with a valid library card can register for Spring Listening/Viewing Club, and all participants are eligible for weekly prize drawings, as well as the grand prize drawing.
Librarian Margo Hill, one of the Library staff members who inaugurated Spring Listening & Viewing Club, said one goal of the club is to promote conversation and discussion among the community.
“We love talking with our patrons about music, movies, and television shows,” said Hill. “We were looking for a more structured way to interact with our community around our shared appreciation and love of the musical and visual arts. [Spring Listening/Viewing Club] will help us do that.”
Spring Listening & Viewing Club participants can check out anything in the Library’s music and video collection and have their choices count towards the completion of the club’s watching/listening log. Patrons are also able to count any movie or music album accessed on Hoopla, a free library service that enables people to check out movies, music, and other materials digitally with their library card.
The only requirement of Spring Listening& Viewing Club is that, of ten movies or music albums a participant enjoys, two must be award winners. Hill said the Library will have a variety of lists and displays on hand to help community members find the perfect award winner to watch or listen to.
“In addition to watching or listening to a wide variety of current and classic movies and music, Spring Listening & Viewing Club gives the community the opportunity to experience works that are critically acclaimed,” said Hill. “It’s a great chance to catch movies or music that you may have missed the first time around.”
The Library’s annual Summer and Winter Reading Clubs allow the community to see firsthand the wide range of available books they can enjoy; Spring Listening & Viewing Club shines the spotlight on another area of the Library’s collection.
“We hope [Spring Listening & Viewing Club] will give patrons a chance to experience the depth of the Library’s multimedia collections,” said Hill. “And, of course, we hope our patrons have fun with it!”
Spring Listening & Viewing Club Runs from March 1-May 31. The first 300 participants to sign up will receive a special sign-up gift
