After thirteen years of annual juried art shows, the Northbrook Public Library is preparing to debut the final juried exhibition on Friday, October 9 at 7pm.
Flights of Fancy: Unexpected Works of Whimsy is the theme for this year’s show, and true to its name, the exhibition promises one of the strongest—and most unique—shows in its history.
“We wanted a lighthearted and playful theme,” said art show coordinator Celina Preston. “Part of the show is to challenge and surprise the viewer, taking them to an uninhibited place of wonder.”
The Flights of Fancy show asked artists to embrace unconventional and repurposed materials in their submissions, though all subjects and media were considered.
“Artists used a bit of everything, from soil to magazines to found objects like tricycles,” said Preston. “About a third of the show is sculptural works, which is more than we’ve had in the past.”
At the show’s opening on October 9, guests can meet and mingle with the artists and cast their vote for the Viewer’s Choice awards. First, second, and third place winners will be announced at the show. The first place winner will receive a $2000 purchase prize, and will have their winning piece permanently on display in the Library. Of the 484 pieces that were submitted, 64 works from 31 artists were accepted into the show.
“We’re showcasing a lot of local artists, which is great. It gives them a forum to show their skill,” said Preston. “The show has a lot of newcomers, too, as well as artists from all over the USA.”
Each year, the Library’s juried art show puts a spectacular array of art on display for the community to enjoy in a memorable, cultural experience. The Library’s art show coordinator is confident that the final show will be no exception.
“The jurors [artists Rebecca Dudley and Jay Ryan] both took the theme very seriously. They were very surprised at some of the work we received,” said Preston. “The jurors saw things even they hadn’t seen before. I think the community is really going to enjoy this show.”
Flights of Fancy: Unexpected Works of Whimsy will run from October 9 until November 20.
