The recently-resurfaced 1916 Sherlock Holmes film will make its first Chicago area appearance at the Northbrook Public Library on Wednesday, September 9 as part of the Library’s classic film series.
The film, once thought to be lost, was found in France in 2014 and made its American debut at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival in May of this year. Now, the film is making its way towards Chicago, where it was originally filmed. The first stop on this journey is the auditorium of the Northbrook Public Library.
“We feel very lucky to be premiering the film in the Chicago area and bringing it to our 16th silent film festival,” said MultiMedia Department Manager Steve Gianni.
Sherlock Holmes is one of five silent films being screened at the Library in September as part of the Wednesday Classic Film Series’ annual “Rarities from the Silent Era” program. Other upcoming classic titles screening in September include The Docks of New York, The Grim Game, and Chicago. Each film will feature live piano accompaniment by Dave Drazin, who has played countless Silent Film Festivals, including the Pordenone Silent Film Festival in Italy. Each film will be screened on Wednesdays at 1pm and 7:30pm in the Library’s theatre-style auditorium.
“We strive do to the lesser seen films [for the Silent Series],” said Gianni. “We like to present films you can’t get on Netflix or on DVD. We book films that deserve to be seen on the big screen in their original format.”
